Happy Birthday to Me

|

If you've read my blog at all over the past year or so, you'll know how much I'm digging my new guitar gear, especially my Mesa Boogie Mark V head. The thing is so wickedly good at everything. It'll play at living room volume and be perfectly happy. It'll crank-up to 90-watts and blow your hair back without hesitation. Tone, control, power, finesse - it's got it all.

I had the head paired with a single Mesa Boogie 2x12 rectifier cabinet and while I liked the sound, I always felt like something was missing. It needed a little more "warmth" and "depth." Consulting with my pal and professional guitarist, Jeremy, he suggested adding a second rectifier cabinet.

Problem? Those cabinets are around $700 new. And no one sells them locally, so I'd have to have one shipped (they're heavy, at 65-lbs each), or take a long trip to get one. So, I started watching Craigslist to see if anyone was looking to offload one of theirs.

Lo-and-behold, I found a mint cabinet in Elizabeth, IL (near Galena). I made a call, struck a deal, and took a short road trip to northwest Illinois with my pal Tony riding co-pilot.

The cabinet was *pristine* - literally as new, and it included castors (a $100 value). Score!

And now I have my dream set-up. Two dual rectifier 2x12 cabinets and the Mark V head. The sound improved so dramatically, partially from the addition of two 12" speakers, and partially from raising some of the speakers closer to ear level.

The rig also looks a little more menacing...

I'm not sure how much my renter appreciates the new rig (I kid - I make sure to keep the volume low when she's around and I check-in regularly to make sure she can't hear me practicing), but I'm in love with it. I think I've finally got the perfect set-up!

Now, back to practicing... all that sucks these days is the guy playing the guitar and amp set-up. ;-)
